Fashion Finds Leather Haul

It’s evident that the fall season is in full bloom, and we are all adding new items to our wardrobes. The items that you must have during this season is leather! This weekend, I was out in East Village in the lower east side of NYC for lunch and I decided to to walk around the area. Since I occasionally thrift from time to time, I decided to browse through the No Relations Vintage store. I purchased two amazing black leather skirts: a knee length and a mini skirt for only $20. Shortly after, I went to century 21 and I was in search for new fall items. Then, I stumbled upon this super simple and chic 100% lambskin leather jacket by Twenty8Twelve, a fashion brand from London, which I am in love with. I couldn’t believe the original price for the jacket was $600, and I purchased it for $150; this was a deal I couldn’t pass. These basic leathers are perfect for transitional and layering pieces. Totally in love with my new purchases, and I can’t wait to showcase my personal style in them.

5 Minute Makeup Routine!

We all have those days, when were rushing out the door and only have ample amount of time to get ready. Well today’s your lucky day. I am going to demonstrate how to achieve a “5 Minute Makeup Routine“, that will have you looking simple yet  flawless before heading out that door. On a rushed morning, the absolute minimum is best. Your daily makeup routine should include core basics. You’ll want to start with a good foundation to ensure the skin looks its best.

To start off you want to ensure that you face is well prepped. You want to make sure that your beautiful canvas is cleansed, moisturized, and primed before applying any makeup. This is key step into any makeup or daily beauty routine, it will help create a smooth canvas for easier makeup application.

  1. Apply the foundation of your choice. Foundation can easily do double duty as concealer to spot-treat redness, under eye circles, or any other imperfections.
  2. When applying your foundation you can opt for a foundation brush, beauty blending sponge, or simply use your  clean fingers to save time.
  3. Remember, you don’t have to apply foundation all over the face. Only apply it on an as needed, which will also save time.

Approximate time: 1 minute

5 Minute Foundation

Use clean fingers or a damp beauty blending sponge to apply foundation.

Filling in brows is an important step to add to your makeup routine, as this will help frame the face. Some of us may have fuller brows than others. So for most women they step is may be optional.

  1. First you want too fill in your brows using a retractable brow pencil or a matte eye shadow that matches your natural brow hairs.
  2. If your using a brow pencil when filling in brows, you want to use light feathering strokes. Do not put apply too much pressure, as this may have give off a harsh appearance to the brow.
  3. When using a matte eye shadow you want to apply your product with an angled eye liner brush also using light strokes filling in any sparse gaps where needed.
  4. Using a Spoolie, brush brow hairs in the direction in which the hairs are growing for that well groomed perfected brows.

Approximate time: 1 minute

5 Minute BrowCHEEKS

When it comes to the cheeks you want to apply either a blusher or bronzer. Blush adds a natural flush and tint to the cheeks, while bronzer gives off a more structured and natural sun kissed appearance. Cream blush or lipstick is a makeup bag must, especially when you travel, because you can use either items on the lips and cheeks. If you have a red or pink lip color in your bag, you can always apply a little lipstick on your cheek for a pop of color. You’ll look more awake and pulled together in a time crunch with subtle tinted cheeks. Either blush or bronzer is can be applied in this step.

  1. Cream blushes make your skin appear more dewy (natural).
  2. Apply blush to the highest point of your cheek bones using your fingers. If its a powdered substance use a blush brush to apply.
  3. Bronzer is to be applied to the temples and hollows of the cheeks for that natural sun kissed glow.

Approximate time:  30 seconds

5 Minute Blush & BronzerLASHES

Curl your lashes and add mascara. This goes quickly, depending on how many times you make a mistake. In that case if that happens use a moist cotton swab to remove tiny unwanted mascara streaks that may have been left behind.

Approximate time: 1 minute

5 Minute MascaraLIPS

Lastly, is the lips I recommend you using a natural colored  lipstick or tinted lip balm. A mauve color would be suitable, it looks closest to the natural lip color.

Approximate time: 30 seconds to 1 minute

One thing to not save time on is the final process of blending. Always have a blending brush for the eyes and one for the face as part of your arsenal. The biggest mistake I see people make in applying makeup is not buffing out harsh lines on the face, eeeek.” Whether in the eye area, at the lip line, or across your complexion, you should never be able to tell where color is ending or beginning. It should all be seamless.

Approximate time: 1 to 2 minutes

How to find the Perfect Red Lipstick for your Skin Tone!

A red lip will always be in style. It makes for a great accessory to minimize neutral makeup that is typically worn during the fall (in my case, I wear it all year round). It’s a simple way to make your look go from “Drab” to “Fab.”  To guarantee your wearing your red lipstick to its fullest potential, I have compiled tips, tricks and products to help you find your red lipstick match.

UndertonesKeeping your skin tone in mind is always key when choosing colors for any makeup and it’s no different when choosing a red lip. If you don’t know what your skin tone is, just remember that fair complexions have cool skin tones with pink undertones. Warm skin tones have olive or blue undertones. The quickest way to determine if you’re warm or cool is to take a look at the veins in your arms in a natural light. If they look green then you are warm, if they look blue you’re cool.

Here are your perfect reds, based on your skin tone:

Warm Skin Tones: orange reds, warm reds, tomato reds, brown-based reds, golden reds and tawny reds.

Rihanna red lipstick

An example of a striking warmed toned orange red lipstick as seen on Rihanna.

Cool Skin Tones: pink tones of red, berry reds, blackberry reds, brick reds, blue tones of red and plum tones.

scarlett johansson red lipstick

An example of a gorgeous red berry lipstick as seen on Scarlet Johansson.

All skin tones – true red (blue undertone suitable for all skin tones)

anne hathaway red lipstick

An example of a beautiful true red lipstick as seen on Anne Hathaway.

What’s the Occasion: Many of you know I am infamous for rocking a bold red lip pretty much anywhere and everywhere. However, certain occasions call for certain types of red lips. For instance, a red lip is a great way to assert your bold femininity at the office, for everyday wear or if your daring enough, even on a first date. For the office you may want to opt for matte red lipstick something bold, but nothing to over powering. For a first date, you may want something a bit more subtle. Try a pinkish red lipstick; this gives attention to your lips but not too much to where that’s all that meets the eye.

Tips and Tricks those Perfect Red Lips:

  • Don’t play up your eyes. Pair red lipstick with the lightest possible eye makeup.  A little mascara and neutral eye shadow will do.
  • Avoid deep reds if you have thin lips. They tend to make lips look smaller.
  • Prevent “bleeding.” Apply a little concealer around the border of your mouth and always use a lip liner.
  • Avoid getting lipstick on your teeth. After applying, put your finger in your mouth, purse your lips around it, then slowly pull it out to remove excess color.

Here are a few lipstick shades you can purchase for Fair, Medium, and Dark skin tones, whether you are penny pinching or if you even want to splurge.

“King of the Fall” Tour Recap!

Barclay's King of the Fall #3

The Weeknd (Abelxo)

I attended the “King of the Fall,” concert on Friday at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, New York. I must say, it  was an amazing experience.  Jhene Aiko was the opening act followed by School Boy Q, and last but not least, my idol “The Weeknd.”  I am in LOVE with The Weeknd and when I heard he was coming to Barclay’s for the “King of the Fall Tour,” I patiently waited for the release to purchase my concert ticket. The Weeknd performance was beyond what I expected; I felt as if he was singing to me and it still gives me chills.  My experience at this concert was totally different than any other show that I have attended. The crowd was very energetic and so interactive with one another.  One of my favorite parts of the evening was when the crowd was singing in unison with their cellphone and lighters up, while The Weeknd performed “Wicked Games.”

My outfit for the evening was simple yet chic. I wore a high low top with burgundy faux leather pants. For accessories I decided to throw a black floppy hat for a feminine touch, along with black and gold sunglasses. My hand bag was black with ribbed detailing for an edge and on my feet I chose hard wood platformed chunky heels for comfort. This outfit was quite comfortable and fluid, it was perfect for the weather, a great transition outfit into fall.

10 Essential Makeup Must Haves for Beginners, Part Two!

 Makeup Must Haves!

Welcome back beauties,  In my previous post  “10 Essential Makeup Must Haves for Beginners, Part One“, I stated how most of us women tend to carry for more makeup and beauty products then expected. Today I have listed the last five essential items that make up the 10 must haves items you should always keep in your makeup bag. So ask yourself, if these are items you currently own then you own the right track.

Glide On Eye Pencils– Perfect for beginners and have many benefits.  Eyeliners are soft and glides on as you apply them and they are ideal for lower and upper lash lines as well as on your waterlines. Eye pencils also can be easily smudged for that soft smokey effect.

highlight mac soft and gentle

Highlighter– Is applied to the cheekbones, cupids bow (area on your upper lip) and brow bones. When applying to cheeks, blend highlighter on the highest point of the cheekbones, up towards the temple.

lipstick RevlonColorBurstLipstickSoftNude

Perfect Nude Lipstick or Lip Gloss–  Nude lipstick is perfect for everyday use. Its a neutral shade that can be quite sexy if worn correctly. (choose a nude lipstick that is within two shades of your natural lip color).

Lip Gloss is a primarily used to give lips a glossy lustre, and sometimes to add a subtle color. This can be topped over a lipstick or even worn solely by itself, while still giving the appearance  to look natural.

Basic Eye Shadow Palette– A basic compact eye palette is something everyone women should own. Your palette should consist of a few different neutral colors (light to dark) which can be transitioned from a day to night look. The perfect everyday shadow is just a few shades darker than your skin tone.

Brush Set– With the right brush for the job, you can perform makeup miracles. Your brush collection should at least include a foundation brush, powder brush, eye shadow brush, blush/bronzer brush, angled eye liner/brow brush, eye shadow blending brush, lip brush (optional).

This concludes the “10 Essential Makeup Must Haves for Beginners“.  Feel free to comment with any questions and be sure to check out Part One of my essential makeup must haves enjoy!

10 Essential Makeup Must Haves for Beginners, Part One!

makeup essentials

Most women have the same exact problem, a cosmetic bag that’s over flowing, but have no clue what to do with all products. That’s when its time to take back to basics approach. Often clients will ask me what are the beauty basics they need for everyday use.  These products that I have listed below are all you need for a flawless face, and these makeup applications tips that will help you get that look just right. I have only included 5 makeup essentials to begin with, as it may be a bit overwhelming for some who are starting out in beauty. Stay tuned for Part 2 for  “10 Essential Makeup Must Haves for Beginners”

Foundation– foundation is applied to the face to create an even, uniform color to the complexion, to cover flaws and to change the natural skin tone. Either of these foundations can be used daily and are build-able and suitable for all skin types : Mineral, Liquid, Cream, Powder and Tinted Moisturizer.

Mineral Powder– Is perfect for beginners its very light on the skin, and for women interested in natural, organic makeup, mineral foundation is your absolute best bet. Mineral makeup is made up almost always primarily of minerals, which come from nature. Mineral powder is also best for women with sensitive skin or allergies.

Liquid Foundation– There are many versions of liquid foundations, including oil-free, oil-based, waterproof and even 24-hour. They can go from medium to full coverage depending on how much you apply. To build foundation apply light layer let it dry then apply more if needed.

Cream Foundations–  provide a bit heavier coverage and are formulated for normal to dry skin. This product gives off an appearance of natural glowing skin.

Powder Foundation– comes in compact form, so it makes a great foundation for women who want on the go portability. It’s basically a powder and foundation in one and you can get it in several formulations, but it’s really best for women with oily skin.

Tinted Moisturizer– provides light coverage and will cover up some unevenness, but is best for women with pretty good skin. It’s truly a moisturizer with a wash of sheer color. It works as a 2 in 1  makeup product, because it moisturizes while providing an all over sheer color.

yves saint laurent touche eclat

Concealer-Concealer although may just be a temporary fix, it makes under the eye appear more awake. Concealing  helps to get rid of dark circles and to brighten up the center of the face.  Use your ring finger to apply concealer under they eye as this uses less pressure, being that the under eye area is quite sensitive. Use dabbing motions until all the product is distributed evenly and well blended.  .

Natural Blush and Bronzer– The right shade will make you look like you’re blushing, not like you’re wearing blush. For a natural look, start with lighter shades, and skip any with shimmer. Using a blush brush, swipe a small amount of color across the apples of your cheeks. If you see where the blush begins and ends you have used too much. Use a light hand for that natural flushed look. Bronzers are used to achieve that natural beautiful healthy glow. Be sure to find a bronzer that isn’t too red in tone and that also doesn’t have too much shimmer.

eye lash shu uemura

Eye Lash Curler– Curling your eyelashes opens up the eyes and makes them appear larger. Whether your lashes are naturally straight or have flattened out over time, curling your eyelashes can really help your eyes stand out. Selecting a lash curler is important because it needs to fit your eye shape and lash curlers are made quite different. I recommend a curler with a rounded pad vs a flat pad. Over time the rounded pads are more gentle on your lashes and they are less likely to split like the flat ones, which can break your lashes off eeeek.

masacara benefit bad gal

Mascara– is used to darken, thicken and lengthen eye lashes. Replace eye lash mascara every three months to limit bacteria growth and possible eye infections. When applying mascara use a wiggling motion left to right to help reduce clumping.

My Life in Transition!

So I’m lying in bed and I ask myself, what should my next blog post entail? I’ve come to the realization that I haven’t given a full introduction of myself. So, today I wanted to get a bit more personal and share with you guys who I really am and where I come from.

I was born in Brooklyn, New York. Growing up as a child, my mom would dress me and my eldest sister up in big, poofy matching gowns, which I hated.  I always had a frown on my face wondering why we had to dress alike or even dress up at all.

In Elementary and Junior High School, I knew I wasn’t like the other girls. Believe it or not, I was an awkward, nerdy, shy girl. I dressed like a boy and never wore pink. In fact, I disliked the color and wouldn’t be caught dead wearing it at the time. I rarely wore dresses and always had my hair in a ponytail. I chose to wear sweats, jeans, t-shirts and sneakers. In my opinion, it was okay to dress more masculine, but it seemed that my peers thought otherwise. At that time, I was constantly teased by both girls and boys. I had low self-esteem and I no longer felt accepted nor beautiful. There were moments when I felt like if I didn’t exist, life would be better. Shortly after, I tried to change myself to try and fit in. Then, I tried cheerleading, which was an epic fail because I felt like an outcast; I was completely out of my element so I quit. Next, I discovered other sports such as baseball and basketball, which I fell in love with. Soon after, I found myself playing more sports, especially with the boys.

In 2000, I relocated to the Poconos; I was completely devastated. I was living in the boondocks with nothing but trees and animals; huge bummer. I felt I had no choice but to make best of the situation. So one day I decided to go outside and meet my fellow neighbors.  There were a few guys playing basketball, I just stood there and interrupted yelling “I Got Next”, and they looked me as if I were crazy. They ended up letting me play and they were shocked to see that I could actually play. I was beginning to have more fun and come out of my shell. Although I wasn’t at all the “girly girl,” I was now feeling accepted. As time went on I got more comfortable, and I used my awkwardness to humor others.

In 2007 I moved back to NYC.  It wasn’t until 2009 that I began to dress more feminine. I started wearing heels but I wasn’t quite into dresses as much yet. Don’t get me wrong, I still loved to wear my basketball shorts, T-shirts and sneakers from time to time, but I found a balance between the two. As I got older, I admired the different makeup looks I saw in the magazines and even on different television shows. In 2010, I purchased my first 120 eye makeup palette and from then on, I was hooked.

December of 2011, my close friend Ena, who is a model, always admired my makeup work and saw that I had immense passion for it. She then asked if I could do three makeup looks for her photo shoot. I created a natural, neutral, and a dark Smokey eye look. I was then told that photographer Carlos Peralta was the one we were shooting with. He has worked with many celebs and upcoming artists. Of course,  I was honored to even work with someone of his caliber. I didn’t know quite what to expect.  Going into the studio for the first time was a bit nerve wracking but I wanted remain as professional as possible. I felt as if I had been doing this for years; it was just the perfect feeling. I get butterflies just talking about it. Carlos loved my work ethic and even asked if I could come back and do more work with him at his studio.  At that moment I realized this was my passion and there wasn’t anything I saw  myself doing other than makeup.

My first professional photo shoot!

I was always quite artistic and enjoyed making others laugh, so I quickly used that to my advantage and knew that this was something I wanted to pursue as a career.  Ever since, I watched videos, read books and educated myself on the art of makeup. I then found myself applying makeup to friends and family. Soon after, I found myself doing makeup on models, attending photo shoots and even fashion shows. Biggest accomplishment to date were magazine issues in Vogue Italia and Baby Phat Social Media Campaign Photo shoot. It took me quite some time to figure out what I wanted to do, and who I wanted to become as a woman. Every day I learn something new about myself and find myself only getting better with age.  My personal style and makeup techniques have definitely evolved throughout the years. This is just the start to my life and ongoing career.  I am blessed enough to have gotten this far, and happy to share my life journey with you all.
